FXCM review 2026: Trading Station, MT4, TradingView, 40+ forex pairs, and a $50 minimum deposit
FXCM is a London-based NDD/dealing-desk forex broker founded in 1999. Licensed by the FCA, ASIC, CySEC, and ISA under multiple licenses, it trades on Trading Station, MetaTrader 4, and TradingView with Retail, Active Trader, and Professional accounts. Serves retail and professional clients across 40+ forex pairs, share CFDs, indices, commodities, and cryptocurrencies.

What is FXCM?
FXCM is an online forex and CFD (Contract for Difference) brokerage brand founded in 1999. The Stratos Group is headquartered in London, United Kingdom, at 110 Bishopsgate. The broker's official UK site states that Jefferies Financial Group owns the business. The group operates through separate legal entities, so the entity holding a client's account determines the applicable regulation and protections.
The brand serves retail and professional traders across forex and leveraged derivatives. Its operating companies include Stratos Markets Limited in the UK, Stratos Europe Limited in Cyprus, Stratos Trading Pty. Limited in Australia, Stratos South Africa (Pty) Ltd, Stratos Light Limited in Israel, and Stratos Global LLC in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The global entity is a company registration rather than a locally licensed forex firm.
Which regulators license FXCM?
FXCM uses several regulated entities, but the status is not identical across every jurisdiction. FCA (UK Financial Conduct Authority) records Stratos Markets Limited under FRN 217689. CySEC (Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission) lists Stratos Europe Limited under license 392/20. ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) regulates Stratos Trading Pty. Limited under AFSL 309763. Stratos Light Limited is supervised by the Israel Securities Authority.
The broker also discloses Stratos South Africa (Pty) Ltd as an FSCA (Financial Sector Conduct Authority) provider under FSP 46534. FXSharp's public-record check for this review could not verify that FSCA entry as of 19 September 2026, so it remains unverified here. Stratos Global LLC is incorporated in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines under registration 1776 LLC 2022. The broker states that this entity is not required to hold a local financial-services license.
UK retail client money receives additional safeguards. The broker states that retail funds under Stratos Markets Limited are held in segregated client bank accounts. Eligible claimants can receive Financial Services Compensation Scheme coverage up to £85,000. Retail UK accounts also have negative balance protection, while professional clients can lose more than their deposits.
ASIC imposed an interim stop order on Stratos Trading Pty. Limited on 5 December 2025 over deficiencies in its target market determination (source: ASIC, 5 December 2025). ASIC later revoked the order after the firm amended that document. The action therefore represents a documented regulatory intervention, not a current suspension of the Australian license.
Trading platforms
Trading access centers on three interfaces: Trading Station, MetaTrader 4, and TradingView. Trading Station is the broker's proprietary platform, meaning software developed for its own clients. MetaTrader 4, or MT4, supports expert advisors and automated strategies. TradingView connects an account to browser-based charts and order entry.
- Trading Station: desktop, web, and mobile access with market depth and custom indicators.
- MT4: expert advisors, micro lots, custom indicators, and automated trading.
- TradingView: chart-based execution through the broker integration.
MetaTrader 5 is not part of the platform list. The MT4 server is also not independently verified with MetaQuotes. The broker supports API access for qualifying users through FIX, ForexConnect, and Java interfaces. These tools matter mainly to systematic traders who need programmatic order routing rather than manual chart execution.
Account types
The account lineup includes Retail, Active Trader, Professional, and Demo accounts. Retail accounts carry the consumer protections that apply in the client's jurisdiction. Active Trader pricing targets higher-volume clients and can use spread markups or commissions. Professional classification changes both leverage limits and regulatory protections, so it is not simply a lower-cost version of the retail account.
UK professional status requires eligibility tests based on trading activity, portfolio size, or relevant work experience. The broker states that professional clients waive protections including retail leverage restrictions and negative balance protection. Some professional clients also fall outside Financial Services Compensation Scheme eligibility. Demo access exists for platform testing, but simulated execution does not reproduce every live-market condition.
What is the minimum deposit?
The minimum initial deposit for an individual account is $50. The UK help center expresses this as 50 units of the account currency. Corporate, trust, and IRA accounts have different requirements on the UK site. Subsequent card deposits also carry a 50 currency-unit minimum, while bank-wire deposits have no stated minimum.
A small entry threshold does not change margin risk. The amount needed to open a position depends on the instrument, leverage setting, and account equity. Depositing the minimum therefore establishes the account, but it does not describe the capital needed for any specific trading strategy.
Deposit and withdrawal methods
Funding methods include bank transfer, Visa or Mastercard, PayPal, Skrill, and Neteller. The UK site states that domestic bank wires commonly take one to two business days to arrive. International wires commonly take three to five business days. Skrill and Neteller deposits are subject to method-specific limits, while PayPal is available to retail clients.
Withdrawal routes depend on the method originally used and the account's status. The firm states that withdrawal requests are processed within 3-4 business days, after which bank delivery can take additional time. Rapid Transfer is available for deposits in supported currencies but does not support withdrawals. Payment availability can also vary by legal entity and country.
Tradeable instruments
The product range covers more than 40 forex pairs plus CFDs on shares, indices, commodities, and cryptocurrencies. A CFD is a derivative that tracks price movement without transferring ownership of the underlying asset. The UK site also offers spread betting to eligible UK residents, which is a separate derivative structure from standard CFD trading.
Share availability is substantially broader than the forex list. The UK site advertises thousands of share CFDs, while Trading Station displays forex, indices, commodities, baskets, and other derivative markets. Instrument access varies by region because regulators apply different leverage, distribution, and product rules.
Spread and commission structure
A spread is the gap between the bid and ask prices. The broker publishes an average EUR/USD spread of 1.3 pips and GBP/USD of 1.8 pips on its account material. A pip is the standard small price increment used to quote most currency pairs. Spreads are variable, so live pricing can widen during volatile or illiquid periods.
Standard forex pricing primarily uses the spread, while Active Trader accounts can use spread-plus-commission pricing. The broker states that high-volume users can qualify for tiered pricing. On its UK Active Trader schedule, qualifying monthly volume begins at 50 million USD equivalent and requires minimum account equity of £25,000. Those thresholds make the Active Trader structure materially different from the standard retail account.
Leverage and margin requirements
Leverage means controlling a position larger than the cash margin posted. The leverage range is 1:30 / 1:1000, reflecting different entities and client classifications. UK retail leverage is capped at 30:1 on major currency pairs. Other instruments use lower retail caps under the applicable UK and European framework.
Professional and non-UK arrangements can allow higher ratios. FXCM's UK help material states that professional forex accounts can reach 400:1 when equity is below 50,000 currency units. The broker's global platform material advertises leverage up to 1000:1. These figures are not interchangeable because the account entity and regulatory classification determine the available maximum.
The UK MT4 margin framework uses a 50% liquidation level. That means automatic liquidation can trigger when account equity falls to 50% of required maintenance margin. Margin requirements can change by instrument and around market events, so the maximum ratio is not a fixed setting for every position.
Customer support
Customer support operates 24 hours a day, five days a week. The UK site lists phone, email, and live web chat, and its forex page states support is available in more than 15 languages. The contact details are info@fxcm.co.uk and +44 20 7398 4050. A public user-review aggregate stood at 4.7/5 from 983 reviews on 19 September 2026.
Support is split across regional entities, so contact details differ outside the UK. Account, funding, and regulatory questions should be matched to the legal entity shown in the client's account agreement. This matters because South Africa, Cyprus, Australia, Israel, the UK, and the global entity do not provide identical protections or product terms.
Fees beyond the spread
Non-trading costs include inactivity and optional infrastructure charges. The UK site applies an annual dormancy fee after 12 consecutive months without trading activity. The charge is up to 50 account-currency units. The fee is capped at the remaining account balance when that balance is lower.
A virtual private server, or VPS, provides a remote computer for running trading software continuously. The broker charges 30 base-currency units per month for the VPS, with stated exceptions for qualifying Active Trader clients. Funding providers or banks can also impose conversion or transfer charges outside the broker's own fee schedule.

FXCM verdict: pros, cons, and the catch
FXCM combines a long operating history with regulated UK, Australian, Cypriot, and Israeli entities. Its platform set covers Trading Station, MT4, and TradingView, while the individual-account minimum is $50. UK retail clients receive segregated funds, negative balance protection, and eligible FSCS coverage. The broker also publishes a current retail risk warning showing that 65% of retail CFD accounts lose money.
The main trade-off is jurisdictional. FXSharp did not verify the claimed South African FSCA entry, and Stratos Global LLC does not hold a Saint Vincent forex license. ASIC also imposed a temporary stop order in December 2025 before revoking it after amendments. Readers comparing the group should therefore identify the exact contracting entity, because leverage, compensation coverage, and negative balance protection change with that entity.
